United Way of Martin County is participating in
a national Day of Action by holding a free
family event 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 21 in
Flagler Park in downtown Stuart.
June 21 – the longest day of the year – has been
chosen for local United Ways across the country
to shine a light on ways people can advance the
common good in their community. United Way is
leading the “Live United” call to action: to
give, advocate and volunteer to make lasting
changes in people’s lives, with a focus on
education, income and health.
Each local United Way can decide what it wants
to do for the Day of Action. Here in Martin
County, United Way has taken advantage of an
opportunity to use Flagler Park as the venue and
has crafted a lineup of entertaining and
educational events thanks to community partners.
Here is an overview of activities.
-
Martin County High
School Drama Club students will perform
skits from CHARACTER COUNTS!, which is a
program of United Way of Martin County.
-
Educational coloring
activities will be offered for young
children. Participants can enter a drawing
for backpacks full of food, provided by the
Treasure Coast Food Bank.
-
Martin Volunteers, a program of
United Way of Martin County, will present
volunteer opportunities for people of all
ages.
-
Who Got Game will
present a health expo that includes about a
dozen local agencies.
-
Speakers, singers and
dancers will perform, courtesy of Who Got
Game.
-
Middle and high school
players will participate in a 3-on-3
basketball tourney, coordinated by Who Got
Game.
-
Everyone will have the
opportunity to tell a videographer how they
“Live United.”
-
Healthy snacks will be
available from local sponsors, including
Amy’s Organic Restaurant & Market,
HealthEase, and Robert Erneston Produce.
“We believe these
activities will help educate people on ways they
can be healthier in their own lives as well as
learn about local health and nutrition
services,” said Diane Tomasik, communications
director of United Way of Martin County.
The Day of Action’s
partnership with Who Got Game came about because
the nonprofit organization – which is focused on
combating childhood obesity – had been planning
a bike-a-thon and health expo for the same day.
“Because of the health and education emphasis of
our event and theirs, it seemed natural to
partner and bring our events and audiences
together,” Mrs. Tomasik said.
People interested in Who
Got Game’s bike-a-thon should begin gathering at
the 10th Street Recreation Center,
724 E. Tenth St., at about 8:30 a.m. on June 21.
The bike ride – about 1.5 miles -- starts at
9:30 a.m. and ends at Flagler Park, 201 S.W.
Flagler Ave., where participants can enjoy the
Day of Action festivities. For more information
